The Strange Bathroom Trick That Left a Mother-in-Law Completely Confused

When she walked into her daughter’s home that afternoon, she expected nothing more than a normal visit — coffee, conversation, and maybe a little time with her grandkids. Instead, she noticed something that immediately made her uneasy.

Her son-in-law was in the bathroom, carefully stretching a balloon over the shower drain.

At first, she thought it was a joke. But when she later saw several more balloons neatly stored on a shelf, her concern grew. Their relationship had never been close, but this felt too strange to ignore.

When she asked her daughter about it, the response was cold and firm.

“It’s none of your business. Just leave it.”

That answer only made things feel more suspicious. What could possibly require covering a drain with balloons?

The truth, however, was far less mysterious than she imagined.

Some homeowners use balloons or rubber covers as a simple seal to block odors coming from the plumbing system. In certain houses, especially older ones or bathrooms that aren’t used frequently, sewer gases can rise through the drain when the water trap dries out. Stretching a balloon tightly over the opening creates a temporary airtight seal that prevents unpleasant smells from entering the room.

Others use the same trick during deep cleaning, plumbing work, or when treating drains with chemicals — the cover keeps fumes contained and improves the effectiveness of the treatment.

What looked strange and secretive was actually a practical household solution.

Sometimes the things that seem suspicious at first glance turn out to be simple fixes for everyday problems. And in many homes, the most unusual habits often come from experience — not secrecy.
