You’d Better Know What They’re Actually For

You’ve probably seen them in nearly every kitchen — those small cupboards above the fridge. Most people either ignore them or use them to stuff away things they rarely need. But it turns out, those mysterious overhead cabinets actually have a purpose… and it’s not what you’d expect.

Originally, these cupboards were designed to store items that benefit from a more consistent temperature. Since the space above the fridge tends to stay warmer than other parts of the kitchen, it was ideal for dry goods that shouldn’t be exposed to humidity — like bread, crackers, or baking supplies.

Back in the day, homeowners often used them to store large serving platters or seasonal cookware too bulky for other cabinets. The idea was to utilize every inch of space in the kitchen efficiently, even the hard-to-reach areas.

However, as kitchen designs evolved and fridges became larger, these cupboards lost their original function. Today, most people don’t even realize that heat from the fridge compressor can affect the contents inside — making it a terrible spot for chocolate, wine, or anything sensitive to temperature.

If you still use that space, here’s what works best:

  • Paper towels or napkins
  • Small kitchen appliances you don’t use often
  • Serving trays or roasting pans
  • Cookbooks you rarely grab

Just don’t store anything perishable or heat-sensitive.

So the next time you look above your fridge, remember — it’s not just a random cupboard. It was a clever bit of kitchen engineering… that most of us completely forgot.
