Why People Leave Coins on Military Graves

Two weeks after losing her military husband, a grieving wife returned to his grave and noticed something she hadn’t expected. Several coins had been carefully placed on top of his gravestone. At first, the sight frightened her because she had no idea who had left them or what they were supposed to mean.

But the coins were not a warning or anything sinister. Leaving coins on the graves of military veterans is a tradition used by visitors to quietly show respect and indicate that someone stopped by. For families who don’t recognize the custom, discovering the coins unexpectedly can understandably create confusion.

Different coins are commonly associated with different messages. A penny generally means someone visited and paid their respects. A nickel traditionally indicates that the visitor and the deceased trained together, while a dime can signify that they served together. A quarter carries the most personal meaning, traditionally indicating that the visitor was present when the service member died.

Once she learned what the coins represented, the sight that had initially frightened her took on an entirely different meaning. Those small pieces of metal showed that people still remembered her husband, had taken time to visit his resting place, and had quietly honored his military service without disturbing the family.

So there was no reason to fear the coins. They were tokens of remembrance and respect left by people visiting a veteran’s grave. What initially seemed mysterious was actually a silent message to the family: someone came, someone remembered, and her husband’s service had not been forgotten.
