I’d been with my boyfriend for nine months, and once a week we went out to dinner with his kids. At first, I enjoyed those evenings because I wanted to become part of their lives. But every single time the bill arrived, my boyfriend suddenly reached into his pockets and announced, “Oh no, I forgot my card again.” With his children sitting there, I never wanted to cause a scene, so I always ended up paying.

After months of this, I realized it wasn’t forgetfulness anymore. He knew exactly what he was doing. Then one Friday, just after I received my paycheck, he suggested an expensive restaurant and encouraged his kids to order whatever they wanted. They added appetizers, expensive entrées, desserts, and extra drinks until our table was covered with food. I watched him smiling because he clearly expected me to handle the massive bill like always.

What he didn’t know was that I had planned something different. Before leaving home, I deliberately brought only enough cash to pay for my own meal. When the server placed the bill on the table, my boyfriend performed his familiar routine. He searched his pockets, looked inside his wallet, and finally turned toward me. “I can’t believe this. I forgot my card again.” I smiled and replied, “That’s unfortunate. I only brought enough money for myself.”

His face went completely pale. He whispered that I couldn’t leave him there with his children and no way to pay, but I reminded him that he had chosen the restaurant and encouraged everyone to order so much. I paid for exactly what I had eaten, tipped the server, and walked outside. He eventually had to call his brother, explain the situation, and ask him to drive across town with enough money to cover the rest of the bill.

The next morning, my boyfriend accused me of embarrassing him in front of his children. I told him that forgetting a card once was an accident, but doing it every week for months was a decision. Then I ended the relationship. I never regretted paying for those earlier dinners because his children hadn’t done anything wrong, but that final restaurant bill taught their father something he should already have known: generosity is something freely given, not something you repeatedly trick another person into providing.
