I Was His Nurse for Ten Years

I was a live-in nurse for a grumpy old man for ten years. He complained about everything—his breakfast, the temperature, the television—but over time I learned that beneath his difficult personality was a lonely man whose children rarely visited. When his health deteriorated, I stayed beside him through sleepless nights, hospital visits, and eventually his final hours. The morning after he passed away, his children arrived and ordered me out of the house without even paying my final salary.

I packed my belongings and left without arguing. Five days later, his oldest son called me in a panic. “Get here NOW!” he shouted before hanging up. Part of me thought karma had finally caught up with them, but when I returned, the entire family was gathered in their father’s bedroom. His son pointed underneath the bed and asked whether I knew anything about a small locked metal box they had discovered hidden there.

I recognized it immediately. Their father had forbidden me from touching it, saying only that its contents were meant to be opened after his death. His son forced the lock open, expecting money or valuables. Instead, we found years of handwritten journals, photographs, bank documents, and a sealed envelope addressed directly to me. Sitting beside it was another envelope marked, “For my children.”

Inside my envelope was a letter thanking me for giving him ten years of care when his own family had barely given him ten days. Attached was a copy of his will and documents showing that he had left me the house along with a substantial savings account. His children received separate inheritances, but far less than they had expected. His final letter explained that the decision wasn’t revenge—he simply wanted his belongings to go to the people who had actually been part of his life.

The room became completely silent. The same children who had thrown me onto the street five days earlier were now standing inside a house that legally belonged to me. I didn’t celebrate or humiliate them. I simply collected the salary they still owed me, gave them time to remove their father’s personal belongings, and kept the letter he had written. After ten years of believing the old man barely appreciated me, I finally understood that he had noticed everything.
