At Nearly 103, He Is the Oldest Living Star—Details in the First Comment

Ray Anthony has lived through more than a century of American entertainment, carrying with him memories of an era when big bands filled ballrooms and the sound of a trumpet could define an entire evening. Born Raymond Antonini on January 20, 1922, in Bentleyville, Pennsylvania, Anthony discovered the trumpet as a child and eventually turned that early fascination into an extraordinary musical career.

His breakthrough came while he was still remarkably young. Anthony joined Glenn Miller’s celebrated orchestra around 1940, placing him alongside musicians who helped create some of the defining sounds of the swing era. His career was interrupted by World War II, when he served in the U.S. Navy and led military bands that entertained servicemen in the Pacific.

After the war, Anthony formed his own orchestra and became a major bandleader in his own right. His recordings included favorites such as “The Bunny Hop,” while his versions of themes associated with Dragnet and Peter Gunn helped introduce his trumpet to another generation. His success eventually earned him a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in the Recording category.

Anthony’s career also stretched beyond recordings. He appeared in movies and television, led his own variety program and spent decades preserving the big-band sound that had shaped his youth. Even as musical tastes changed dramatically, his name remained tied to the elegance and energy of the swing era.

And his longevity makes his story even more remarkable. Anthony passed his 100th birthday in 2022, becoming one of the extraordinary surviving links to the golden age of big-band entertainment. His life represents far more than longevity: it is a journey stretching from Glenn Miller and World War II through Hollywood, television and decades of American popular music.
