I Had No Idea What This Old Kitchen Tool Was For

At first glance, this heavy metal contraption looks more like something from an old workshop than a kitchen appliance. With its large crank, wooden handle, screw clamp, and funnel-shaped opening, it can leave younger generations wondering what anyone could possibly have used it for.

The answer is surprisingly simple: it is an old-fashioned manual meat grinder. The pictured design is an ELMA No. 5-style grinder, made to clamp securely onto the edge of a sturdy table or countertop. ELMA catalogs describe the No. 5 as a hand-operated grinder using this same clamp-fastening design.

To use it, pieces of meat were placed into the opening at the top. Turning the wooden-handled crank rotated an internal auger, which pushed the meat toward a blade and perforated grinding plate at the front. The ground meat then emerged through the holes, ready for dishes such as sausages, meatballs, burgers, or other recipes.

These machines were particularly useful before electric food processors and meat grinders became common household appliances. Their cast-metal construction made them remarkably durable, and they required no electricity. In fact, vintage ELMA No. 5 grinders can still be found in working condition today, decades after they were manufactured.

So the mysterious object that many younger people might struggle to identify is simply a hand-cranked meat grinder—a piece of traditional kitchen equipment that once turned a physically demanding food-preparation job into a much easier task. For anyone who grew up watching parents or grandparents prepare meat at home, however, that familiar wooden crank may bring back memories immediately.
