Finding a toad sitting beside your doorway or suddenly hopping across your yard can be surprising, especially when several seem to appear around the same time. Although folklore sometimes treats visiting toads as symbols of luck, rain, or change, there is usually a much simpler explanation for why they are attracted to a particular home.

Toads often come close to houses when the surrounding environment provides exactly what they need: moisture, shelter, and plenty of insects to eat. After rain or during warm, humid nights, they become particularly active and may leave their usual hiding places to search for food.

Outdoor lights can indirectly make a house especially attractive. Lights around porches and entrances draw moths, mosquitoes, beetles, and other insects. Toads quickly discover these concentrated feeding areas and may repeatedly return because they can catch insects with relatively little effort.

Gardens, piles of leaves, rocks, gaps beneath steps, and damp areas around plants can also provide excellent daytime hiding places. Because toads generally prefer cool, protected locations, a yard with plenty of vegetation and moisture can become an ideal temporary habitat. Their presence can even benefit a garden because they consume many insects and other small invertebrates.

So when a toad repeatedly comes to your house, it usually isn’t predicting something mysterious. It most likely means your property is providing food, moisture, or safe shelter. If you don’t mind having them around, leaving them undisturbed can give your yard a quiet little insect hunter that works throughout the night.
