How One Simple Misunderstanding Ended Up Bringing Us Closer Than Ever

My girlfriend made fried eggs for breakfast one morning, and everything seemed completely normal until I noticed something that caught me off guard. She took the eggs straight from the carton, cracked them into the pan, and started cooking. Growing up, I had always watched my mother rinse eggs before using them, so I genuinely believed skipping that step was unhygienic.

Without thinking much about how it might sound, I told her she should have washed the eggs first. She immediately became defensive and asked why I was criticizing the way she cooked. I tried explaining that my mother had always rinsed them, but that only made things worse. To her, it sounded as though I was comparing her cooking to my mother’s and telling her she was doing something wrong.

Later, after we had both calmed down, we decided to actually find out which method made sense instead of arguing about it. What we discovered surprised me: commercially sold eggs are often cleaned before reaching stores, and washing them again immediately before cracking them isn’t automatically necessary. More importantly, rinsing can potentially spread bacteria from the shell around the sink or nearby kitchen surfaces if it isn’t done carefully.

Suddenly, our ridiculous breakfast argument became funny. I apologized for assuming that something my family had always done was the only correct way. She admitted that she had reacted strongly because she thought I was judging her rather than simply asking a question. We ended up talking about all the little habits we had inherited from our families without ever stopping to question them.

That morning taught us something much bigger than how to prepare eggs. Relationships bring together two people with different routines, traditions, and ideas of what is “normal,” and disagreements don’t always mean someone is wrong. Sometimes asking why, listening to the answer, and being willing to change your mind can turn an unnecessary argument into greater understanding—and that simple misunderstanding ended up bringing us closer than ever.
