I Saw My Son-in-Law Covering the Shower Drain With a Balloon

A visit to her daughter’s home took an unexpected turn when a mother noticed something she had never seen before. Her son-in-law was carefully placing a balloon over the shower drain, and several more unused balloons were sitting on a nearby bathroom shelf. Curious about the unusual sight, she asked what he was doing, but her daughter simply replied that it was nothing to worry about and asked her to leave it alone.

Unable to stop thinking about it, she began wondering whether there was a hidden reason behind the strange habit. Friends offered all kinds of theories, ranging from plumbing tricks to home maintenance methods, while others suspected it might be part of an unusual cleaning routine. The mystery only grew because no one in the household seemed interested in explaining it.

The real reason turned out to be surprisingly practical. Her son-in-law had been using the balloon as a temporary seal over the shower drain while treating the plumbing for drain flies. By covering the drain overnight after applying a cleaning solution, he prevented insects from escaping through the pipes while allowing the treatment to work more effectively. The extra balloons were simply replacements for future treatments.

Once the explanation became clear, the strange bathroom setup suddenly made perfect sense. It wasn’t a secret project or anything suspicious—it was simply an inexpensive household trick that some homeowners use when dealing with stubborn drain pests. The method helped keep the treatment contained until the infestation had been eliminated.

Although the sight initially raised questions, the mystery had a perfectly ordinary answer. Sometimes the most unusual things people notice around the house turn out to be simple maintenance techniques that look far stranger than they really are, proving that there’s often a practical explanation behind everyday mysteries.
